Welcome to a Special Workshop on International Agri-Biotech Policy in Hangzhou, China

Supported by the 7th CAER-IFPRI Annual Conference and a number of relevant institutions and experts from China and overseas, a special workshop on international agri-biotech policy will be taking place at Zhejiang A&F University in Hangzhou, China, on October 16, 2015 (Friday).

The 7th annual conference in 2015, sponsored by China Agricultural University, Zhejiang A&F University, and International Food Policy Research Institute in the United States, aims to explore the related issues and countermeasures of food security, safety and nutrition in both China and the rest of the world. Along with the 7th annual conference, the primary objectives of the special workshop are to discuss the global agri- biotech industry and policy developments from selected countries and regions, such as Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, European Union, India and the United States, and to look into its implications for China and the rest of the world. 

Agri-biotech is emerged as a key driver for agricultural production within an international context. According to the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), a record 181.5 million hectares of biotech crops were grown globally in 2014 in 28 countries from 175.2 million hectares in 2013, at an average growth rate of 12.2% since 2000. A number of renowned academic experts, policy officials and business professionals from China, Canada, United States, and Europe have been invited to speak to the Workshop and/or the Conference. For examples:

  • Dr. Derek Brewin, Associate Professor, Department of Agribusiness & Agricultural Economics, University of Manitoba, Canada;
  • Dr. Clive James, Founder and Chair of the Board of Directors, ISAAA;
  • Dr. Jikun Huang, Founder and Director of Center for Chinese Agricultural Policy (CCAP) of Chinese Academy of Sciences at Beijing, China;
  • Dr. Ruifa Hu, Professor, School of Management and Economics, Beijing Institute of Technology;
  • Dr. Yafan Huang, President of Canadian Association for Plant Biotechnology and Chief Scientific Officer, Performance Plants, Canada;
  • Dr. Michael Reed, Professor of Agricultural Economics and Director of International Programs for Agriculture at the University of Kentucky, USA;
  • Dr. David Spielman, Senior Research Fellow on Environment and Production Technology at IFPRI;
  • Dr. Liangzhi You, Senior Research Fellow on Environment and Production Technology at IFPRI;
