Denfar Transnational Development (Denfar) conducts multicultural and transnational business services which foster cultural exchange and skill sharing between Chinese-Ontarians and the wider community. Participants increase their capacity as volunteers as well as their employment potential and they will also find opportunities for increased community engagement. The learning-based projects facilitated by Denfar reduce the isolation felt by many members of the Chinese-decent community as they face the challenges of integrating into mainstream society. Denfar is a leading organization in operating successful learning programs for both Chinese immigrants and others who are interested in Oriental culture and business. Along with the OULA (Ottawa United Learning Academy), Denfar is dedicated to developing customized learning programs for students, learners, newcomers, and young entrepreneurs, which include seminars, workshops, and individual tutoring. Denfar offers participants the opportunity to develop intercultural understanding and knowledge of transnational business, particularly that of East Asia and its diaspora.
Transnational Corporations Review (TNCR), published by the Ottawa United Learning Academy (OULA) and Denfar Transnational Development (Denfar), is a modern media journal dedicated to providing economic, policy, and business analysis of current issues related to transnational corporations (TNCs), foreign direct investment (FDI), institutional innovation, and international development. The journal emphasizes China's growing involvement in the global economy. FDI by TNCs is the most dominant and dynamic element of the world economy in terms of production value; and TNCR fills the urgent need for a journal on the topic that is available in both English and Chinese. It is the only journal published in the West that addresses the topic from modern economic and business theory and practice including knowledge management perspectives. The journal serves the needs of globally dispersed young professionals and senior graduate students majoring in Chinese business and international economics.
The OULA and Denfar seek parties interested in participating in any of these special projects, as well as domestic and foreign institutions and businesses wishing to sponsor them. The contributions of sponsors are acknowledged and greatly valued and advertising is also welcomed. TNCR is a unique journal in English and Chinese as it is a platform for discussion and analysis of policy, theory, and practice related to TNCs. Its email newsletters provide regular updates in both languages to over 30 000 people while the hard copy of the journal has a circulation of over 10 000 in English and Chinese across North America, Europe, and China. The journal serves TNCs, relevant governments, businesses, and young professionals in the field.
Ottawa International Students Entrepreneurship (OISE) was created by a group of overseas educators and professionals to help international students, especially those from China, to adapt to life overseas and to achieve their educational and career goals. According to UNESCO, China has more students pursuing education overseas than any other country – One in seven international students worldwide is from China. At the end of 2007, greater than one in four international students in Canada (over twenty thousand students in total) were from China; however, around seventy percent of these failed to achieve their goals. Among these, thirty percent changed their program of study and twenty percent either postponed graduation or failed to graduate altogether. China’s economic growth and the improved financial status of its families have changed the background and situation of its typical international student. Aside from the few merit scholarship holders who have financial support to study abroad, many international students from China are from wealthy households and may not have passed the university entrance examinations in their own country. These students often come from one-child families and may have difficulty caring for and motivating themselves in the pursuit of their studies.
OISE aims to reach out to foreign students to help them adapt to their new situation and achieve their academic and personal goals, to reduce the cost of studying abroad, and to alleviate the worries of concerned parents. If efforts and resources are not maximized, students will fail to achieve their goals. This is why OISE employs professionals with extensive teaching and entrepreneurship experience in China and abroad and a strong sense of responsibility. Studying abroad is an opportunity to demonstrate one’s talent, but it is crucial to determine the direction and objectives of study prior to departure. During studies, students should maintain good interpersonal relationships, self-confidence, and a healthy attitude towards life. Resources should be used to foster competitiveness in pursuit of self-affirmation and success. To this end, OISE provides a full-service package including professional guidance on planning student’s programs of study, preparation for language training or individual counselling, regular meetings with students to discuss their progress, and regular communication with parents. In accordance with Canada’s new policy, students who have completed their studies can apply for a three-year work visa. Accumulation of more than one year of work experience can allow students to apply for permanent resident status in Canada. In addition to the above mentioned services, OISE helps students to extend their study permit and to apply for work visas, immigration, and employment support. In addition, the OULA, Denfar, TNCR, and OISE collaborate to provide a full package of cultural and business services. For example, a project called TNCs and China Conferences, facilitates presentations and discussion on government-TNC relations, the current and future role of TNCs, and opportunities and challenges that TNCs face today. Another example is TNC-Online, which is an online program that serves as a bridge between people in modern society. Developed in North America with close connections to Europe and China, TNC-Online takes full advantage of location and resources by using advanced technology to collect information in addition to various approaches to provide services, e.g. offering databases and membership.
