Global Trade and Investment under OBOR: International Symposium of the Five-Year Anniversary of the OBOR Initiative

Hangzhou, China (October 19-21, 2018)
During his visit to Central and Southeast Asia in September and October of 2013, Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled the initiative of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (hereinafter referred to OBOR), which have attracted intensive attention from China and the rest of the world. In order to promote the theoretic studies and academic exchanges related to OBOR when at its 5th anniversary, and to discuss the up-to-date academic advances in the theory and implementation on international trade and investment, Global Trade and Investment under OBOR: International Symposium of the Five-Year Anniversary of the OBOR Initiative will be held in Hangzhou from October 19 to 21, 2018. This symposium is jointly organized by the School of Economics of Zhejiang University and the Transnational Corporations Council of Studies (TNCCS) in Canada. A number of well-known experts and scholars on world economy and international trade will be invited to speak to the symposium. The symposium is currently open to invite submissions of the research papers.
1. Topics of the Symposium
The proposed theme of this symposium is OBOR making new ground in pursuing China’s opening up all fronts and the development of International trade. The OBOR initiative provides a grand vision of openness and cooperation along with the countries. It is oriented to opening, and is aimed at promoting a free flow of economic factors, highly efficient allocation of resources and integration of the markets by upgrading of interconnection among countries in infrastructures, energy and the Internet. Furthermore, the initiative is to enhance the investment and trade facilitation by creating a highly standardized free trade agreement (FTA) network and promoting closer economic ties. In the future, the OBOR initiative is to achieve an open, inclusive and balanced economic cooperation framework that promoting sustainable growth and social development by carrying out higher standards regional cooperation.
Opening and Inclusiveness are the distinguishing features of the OBOR initiative. China is working on building a community with a shared future for mankind in pursuing further opening-up. The country is also pursuing the OBOR Initiative as a priority, given an equal emphasis to "bringing in" and “going global,” follow the principles of achieving shared growth through openness and collaboration in building innovation capacity. With these efforts, China hopes to make new ground in opening the country further through links running eastward and westward, across land and over sea. China is promoting international trade, developing new forms and models for trade, and adopting policies to advocate high-standard liberalization and facilitation of trade and investment. The country is implementing a pre-establishment national treatment system, plus a significantly ease in market access, further open in the service sector, and protection of the legitimate rights and interests of foreign investors. China is improving the balance in opening to different regions, and opening to the western region wider. This includes granting more authorities to pilot free trade zones in reforms, and exploring the opening of free trade ports. China is developing approaches in making outbound investments and promoting international cooperation on productivity and sustainability. The country is exploring globally-oriented networks to international trade, investment. China is financing production and services, and building up strengths for international economic cooperation.
To achieve the aims of the discussions and for better communications and exchanges of academic thoughts among scholars and policy circle and business practitioners, this symposium is proposing to focus on, but not limited to the following topics. Research papers or reports related to the topics below are welcome for submission and discussion in the symposium.

-- Sustainable development of economy and environment under OBOR initiative
-- Regional economic cooperation and development under OBOR initiative

-- Intellectual property rights and technological innovation under OBOR initiative
-- China’s inward and outward FDI and economic growth under OBOR initiative
-- Supply-side reforms, industrial transformation and upgrading under OBOR initiative
-- Industrial cooperation and development of multinational firms under OBOR initiative
2. Submission Guidelines
The Symposium's target groups are experts and scholars from universities, research institutes, think tanks or relevant fields at home and abroad. Selected papers will be given sufficient time for presentation and discussion. The deadline for soliciting contributions: full papers or reports to be submitted before or at 24:00, August 31, 2018 (Friday) (the time when the Email sent). Papers and reports can be written in Chinese or English (English encouraged) and should have not been published anywhere. After the deadline of submission, the Organizing Committee of the symposium will invite experts to screen the submitted papers and reports. The acceptance emails and invitation letters will be issued from September 5, 2018. The final version of the agenda will be released around September 15, 2018.
Format requirements: All papers or reports should be submitted via email. The submissions in A4 in Word file should include a page with the title, abstract (about 400 words), 5-7 keywords, and author(s) information (up to 300 words, including names, affiliations, correspondence address, zip codes, telephones and e-mails). Submissions in English should be submitted according to the guidelines at www.tandfonlinie.come/rncr.

3. Important Notes
Special Support: This Symposium is especially supported by the Hong Kong Economic Association’s SSCI Journal. After the Symposium, outstanding English papers presented will be selected by the Guest- Editors and Editorial Board for an external review for an OBOR Special issue, which will be published as the souvenir of the Initiative’s 5th anniversary. This published special issue will be sent to the policy specialists in government and exports in relevant international organizations. All papers will go through anonymous review process before publishing.
Fees: No registration fees required. Food and meals will be provided during the symposium but the participants need to cover their expenses on travel and hotel accommodations.
